GAIBANDHA, June 24, 2025 (BSS) - Water levels in all the major rivers flowing through the district rose sharply in the last 24 hours till 9pm Tuesday due to rainfall and onrush of hilly water from upstream.
Sources at the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) office said the water level of the Brahmaputra increased by 19cm, the Teesta by 16cm, the Karotoa by 50cm, and the Ghagot by 14cm during the period.
The Brahmaputra at Fulchharighat point was flowing at 232cm, the Karotoa at Chalk Rahimapur point at 458cm, the Ghagot at New Bridge Road point at 280cm, and the Teesta at Kawnia point at 74cm - all below their respective danger levels.
With the rise in river water levels, low-lying areas of the chars and the Brahmaputra river basin under Sundarganj, Sadar, Fulchhari, and Shaghata upazilas have been inundated, leaving local people in fear.
Md Saddam Hossain Paban, a social worker from Kamarjani Bandar area in Sadar upazila, said the water level of the Brahmaputra rose sharply, flooding low-lying areas of Kamarjani union.
A good number of people in the union have been marooned and are passing their days and nights in misery, he added.
Md Matiar Rahman, chairman of the union parishad, said he has briefed the upazila administration about the current flood situation.
Md Hafizul Haque, executive engineer of BWDB in Gaibandha, said 3mm of rainfall was recorded in the last 24 hours till 9pm Tuesday.
He told BSS that if the Brahmaputra and Ghagot rivers continued to rise due to rainfall, they would cross their respective danger levels very soon.
As the rivers are on a rising trend, officials and employees have been put on alert to prevent any damage to the flood control embankments that could lead to fresh inundation of mainland areas, he said.
He added that they are monitoring the situation closely and maintaining regular communication with local public representatives, community leaders, and journalists regarding the flood situation.
