RAJSHAHI, June 24, 2025 (BSS) - Safe food consumption has become crucial to ensure sound public health and all quarters who are engaged in producing, manufacturing, processing and marketing of food should discharge their duties with utmost sincerity and honesty to reach safe food to the consumers in general.
The District office of the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) hosted a seminar titled "Safe Food and Economic Development and Social Context" at the office conference hall of Deputy Commissioner (DC) here today.
Speaking on the seminar, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Mirza Imam Uddin, who chaired the seminar, said food safety has become crucial as the country has almost achieved food security. "Time has come to ensure food safety to build a healthy and prosperous nation," he said.
He said that adulterated and contaminated food poses a serious threat to public health and called for strict punitive measures against those involved in such malpractices. "The existing laws and enforcement agencies alone cannot tackle the issue unless the public becomes aware and takes a firm stance against food adulteration," he added.
Additional District Magistrate Umme Kulsum Sampa, Rajshahi Divisional General Secretary of Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) Golam Mostofa Mamun, President of the local Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry Prof Rozety Naznin, and Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat also addressed the event.
Presenting the keynote, District Food Safety Officer Yeamin Hossain highlighted the current scenario, challenges, and integrated action plans to ensure safe food. He underscored the importance of mass awareness to combat food waste and adulteration.
Chamber leader Prof Rozety Naznin said concerted efforts of all the government and non-government organizations concerned have become indispensable for protecting agriculture from all sorts of pollution and contamination to ensure food safety.
Besides, utmost emphasis should be given on freeing the markets from all sorts of unhygienic and unsafe foods because those are injurious to public health.
All the street food selling shops and hotels should be brought under close monitoring and vigilance to debar them from selling unhygienic and contaminated foods on an urgent basis, she added.
