FENI, July 8, 2025 (BSS) – Incessant downpour for the past two days inundated most parts of the district town, causing immense suffering to the city dwellers.

The main roads of the city are submerged under knee to waist-deep water. Water is also entering shops and houses in low-lying areas.

District Meteorological Office In-charge Mojibur Rahman said the highest rainfall of the year was recorded 347 millimeters in the last 24 hours from 12 noon on Monday to 12 noon today.

He also said that there is a possibility of light to moderate rainfall in the next two days.

Meanwhile, most areas of the town are submerged in water due to heavy rain. Shaheed Shahidullah Kaiser Road, Shanti Company Road, Pathanbari Road, Academy, Masterpara, Sahadebpur, Old Police Quarter, Mizan Para, Birinchi, Barahipur areas are submerged in 2 to 4 feet water.

Former councilor of the municipality Omar Faruk Bhuiyan Belal said that Illegal constructions and encroachments led to floods in the city.

Administrator of the municipality and Deputy Director of the Local Government Department Golam Mohammad Baten told BSS that the drains of the municipality have been cleaned before the monsoon season.

Similarly, the drive to free the canals from illegal encroachment is going on. However, due to sudden heavy rain, the water is receding slowly.

He said that six teams of the municipality have been working since night. He expressed hope that the water will recede quickly if the rainfall decreases.

On the other hand, Executive Engineer of the Feni Water Development Board Akter Hossain Majumder said that due to heavy rain, the water level of rivers in the district including Muhuri and Kahua is increasing.

There is a possibility that the water of the Muhuri, Kahua and Silonia rivers will flow above the danger level. Besides, the flood control dam is at risk. If the rains continue and the water levels in India's upstream recede, there is a possibility of flooding in the region.
