RANGPUR, Aug 19, 2025 (BSS) - Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RPMP) has arrested five leaders of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Awami League (AL) in several cases of attempted murder and attacks on the anti-discrimination student movement protest marches.
A press release from the RpMP Media Cell this afternoon said that they were arrested in separate raids from different parts of Rangpur city in the last 24 hours.
All of them have been arrested as accused in various cases filed at Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali Police Station.
Among those arrested is Shawdat Sayem Shakil, 30. He is the President of Rangpur Metropolitan Ward No 6 unit of banned BCL.
He is a resident of Bahadur Singha in the Burirhat area under RpMP's Porshuram Metropolitan Police Station.
Arrested Md Harun Or Rashid, 63, is a member of Ward No 24 unit of Rangpur Metropolitan Awami League. He hails from the Guptapara area under Metropolitan Kotwali Police Station in Rangpur city.
The arrested Md Anisur Rahman, 54, was an aide of Ward No 4 Awami League General Secretary and former city councilor Haradhan Chandra Roy, who was killed while attacking an anti-discrimination student protest march in the city in July last year.
Anisur Rahman, is a resident of Kamarpara in the Padardighee Dhap area of Rangpur metropolis.
Arrested Anjan Sarkar, 57, is a member of Rangpur Metropolitan Awami League. He hails from the Ward No 24 area adjacent to Guptapara Durga Temple in the city.
Arrested Md. Lablu Mia, 28), is a member of Rangpur Metropolitan Awami League and is known as the private assistant of former Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi.
He is a resident of Madamudan area under Haragach Metropolitan police station of Kawnia upazila in Rangpur.
The Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali Police produced the arrested persons to the Rangpur court, from where they were sent to jail.
