35 boats, dredgers destroyed on charge of sand lifting illegally in Jaflong

SYLHET, July 31, 2025 (BSS) – A taskforce today conducted operation against unauthorized sand lifting activities in the Piyain River in Jaflong under Gowainghat Upazila of the district.

Led by Gowainghat Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Ratan Kumar Adhikari, the taskforce continued the drive for five-hour there.

In the drive, 35 boats loaded with illegally lifted sand were sunk while 20 additional sand-laden boats were destroyed and five dredgers were demolished in the Zero Point, Ballaghat, and Nayabasti areas.

UNO and Executive Magistrate Ratan Kumar Adhikari said, “The raid was launched immediately after receiving reports of illegal sand lifting. This is part of our ongoing effort to protect the environment and enforce the law. Such drives will continue.”
