CUMILLA, Aug 22, 2025 (BSS) - Four members of a family were killed in a road accident in the Paduar Bazar area on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway this afternoon when a cement-laden lorry lost control and overturned.
The accident occurred around 12:30pm in front of the Palli Bidyut Samiti office at the Paduar Bazar Bishaw Road under Cumilla Sadar Dakshin Upazila, according to police and witnesses.
The deceased were Mohammad Omar Ali, 80, his wife Nurjahan Begum, 65, their elder son Abul Hashem, 50, and younger son Abul Kashem, 45. All of them were the residents of Hosenpur village in Barura Upazila of Cumilla.
Abul Hashem was driving the private car at the time of the accident.
Sub-Inspector Anisur Rahman of Moynamoti Crossing Highway Police Station confirmed the identities of the victims and said that all four belonged to the same family.
Constable Saiful Islam, who participated in the rescue operation, said that a passenger bus was attempting to cross the highway from the wrong direction on the Dhaka-bound lane at Paduar Bazar U-turn. In an effort to avoid the bus, the lorry lost control and overturned, crushing the private car and a nearby CNG-run auto-rickshaw.
Four people in the private car died on the spot, while three passengers in the auto-rickshaw sustained serious injuries. They were rushed to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Officer-in-Charge of Moynamoti Highway Police Station, Iqbal Bahar Majumder, confirmed that the bodies and the damaged vehicle have been recovered and brought to the station.
