GAIBANDHA, Sept 6, 2025 (BSS) - A total of 3,439 students and 115 teachers of 10 high schools in flood-prone areas of Sundarganj upazila in the district received training under a disaster risk reduction (DRR) project.

The initiative was undertaken by SKS Foundation, a Gaibandha-based non-government development organization, under the School Led Community Resilience to Disaster and Climate Risks (SLCRDCR) project funded by Muslim Aid UK, Bangladesh Country Office.

The project was implemented in several unions during the 2023-24 fiscal year.

Project Manager Afruja Bulbul said the training aimed to raise awareness among students, teachers, and local communities on minimizing loss of lives and property during emergencies.

She informed that 100 students were recognized as DRR Champions for their outstanding performance in acquiring knowledge and capacity to deal with emergencies.

In addition, infrastructure development work was carried out in the schools to make classrooms more suitable for learning in a safer environment.

Nurul Haque Sarker, head teacher of Kasimbazar High School, one of the institutions covered by the project, said most of his students now have a clear understanding of how to tackle disasters during emergencies.

Community people living in the school's catchment area also benefited by learning ways to reduce risks and protect lives and properties, he added.
