RANGPUR, Oct 22, 2025 (BSS) – Officials and experts at a post-rally discussion today called for working together to reduce the number of deaths and injuries in road accidents to attain the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. 
 
They expressed the view at a discussion held at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room marking the National Road Safety Day-2025 in the city.
 
The district administration and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Rangpur Circle chalked out programmes, including distribution of 100 helmets among motorbike riders, marking the day.
 
Divisional Director (Local Government) Md Abu Jafar attended the discussion as the chief guest with Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rabiul Faisal in the chair. 
 
Assistant Director (Engineering) of BRTA Rangpur Circle Engineer Md Shafiqul Alam Sarkar presented information and pictures marking the day. 
 
He said there is no substitute to skilled drivers as most accidents are caused by reckless driving and called for stopping driving without valid documents alongside taking a strict stanne against those who violate the laws.
 
The chief guest said that the day is celebrated every year to raise awareness to prevent road accidents. 
 
“Despite the development of road infrastructure and the formulation of laws to ensure safe roads, accidents cannot be avoided due to various reasons,” he said. 
 
He said that road accidents occur mainly due to unfit vehicles, inefficient drivers, reckless driving, carelessness of drivers and pedestrians' carelessness. 
 
Stating that road accidents cannot be prevented by making and enforcing laws alone, he called on all concerned to play a responsible role along with awareness in restoring order on the roads and preventing accidents. 
 
The Deputy Commissioner said that currently, in Bangladesh, countless people are injured and killed in road accidents every day. 
 
He mentioned driving on the wrong side of the road, unnecessary overtaking mentality and reluctance of the general public to use over bridges, and the tendency to not obey traffic laws as the main reasons for road accidents. 
 
Earlier, a colorful rally started from the Deputy Commissioner's Office premises and circled various roads before ending at the same place.
 
Superintendent of Police (Traffic and Operations) at DIG Rangpur Range Office BM Ashraful Ullah Taher, Deputy Commissioner (Crime North) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Md Maruf Ahmed and Additional Police Superintendent (Administration) of Rangpur District Police Md Joynal Abedin delivered speeches as special guests.
