MEHERPUR, Nov 9, 2025 (BSS) - Four students drowned in a water body while they were picking lotus flowers at Rajnagar village in Sadar upazila on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Fatema Akhter, 14 and Afia Akhter, 10, daughters of Mujibur Rahman  while Mim Akhter, 14 and Alsia Akhter, 10, daughters of Shaharul Islam of Rajnagar village.  Mujibur Rahman and Shaharul Islam are brothers and they are living at Rajnagar village.

According to locals, the four children went to Baradi-Rajnagar Masurbhaja Beel in the afternoon to pick lotus flowers (locally known as shapla). When they did not return home after a long time, family members began searching for them.

Eventually, villagers discovered the children’s bodies floating in the water and recovered three of them. The fourth body was later recovered by personnel from the Meherpur Fire Service after being informed of the incident.

Confirming the matter, Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mesbah Uddin said that police rushed to the spot and handed over the bodies to the grieving family.

Local authorities and the administration have expressed deep sympathy for the bereaved family and called for increased safety and awareness measures around local water bodies to prevent such tragic accidents in the future.
