RAJBARI, Nov 11, 2025 (BSS) – In an effort to support local farmers and boost agricultural production, seeds and fertilizers were distributed among small and marginal farmers in Rajbari district.

The initiative is part of a larger rehabilitation assistance programme aimed at improving crop cultivation and socio-economic conditions of farmers in the region.

A total of Taka 3,45,3,200 has been allocated this year to support agricultural development across five upazilas of the district.

The distribution event was held at Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) office on Tuesday.

Deputy Commissioner Sultana Akhter was present at the event as the chief guest while Deputy Director of DAE Dr. Md. Shahidul Islam presided over the programme.

Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Saima Haque and Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Joni Khan were present, among others.

High-yielding varieties of seeds for a range of crops -- such as wheat, mustard, sunflower, Chinese almond, onion, lentils, and khesari -- were distributed. Necessary chemical fertilizers were also provided to ensure proper growth and enhanced yields.

Rajbari district has long been known as a significant onion-producing region, contributing to nearly one-third of the country’s total onion production. The district's favorable soil and climate conditions are ideal for growing onions and other Rabi crops.

Dr. Md. Shahidul Islam highlighted the importance of modern agricultural techniques in increasing crop yields. He emphasized that ongoing agricultural incentive programmes are focused on supporting farmers to enhance crop production across the district.

Deputy Commissioner Sultana Akhter underscored the government's commitment to the welfare of farmers. “The government is always with the farmers. By adopting modern agricultural technologies, we cannot only improve farmers' livelihoods but also strengthen our nation's food security,” she said.
