RANGPUR, Nov 28, 2025 (BSS) - The Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) has launched a two-month Satranji weaving training programme in Rangpur, aiming to enhance the skills of local female artisans and strengthen the region's traditional craft industry.

BSCIC Chairman Md Saiful Islam inaugurated the training at the Satranji Project Building in the Nisbetganj area of Rangpur metropolis on Thursday, where he attended as the chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion, he said Satranji, a craft deeply rooted in the rich heritage of the Rangpur region, is not just a product but a unique symbol of creativity and craftsmanship.

"Satranji has already received Geographical Indication (GI) recognition, which has boosted the region's prestige significantly at both national and international levels. It is not only a GI product but an important brand identity of Rangpur," he said.

The training, jointly organised by the BSCIC Development Division and the Rangpur District BSCIC Office, includes 30 female participants who will learn modern weaving techniques, quality improvement methods and marketing skills.

Deputy Director (Local Government) of Rangpur Khristafar Himel Richil presided over the inaugural function.

The BSCIC Chairman said effective promotion is essential for expanding the market reach of any traditional product, including Satranji, adding that maintaining and enhancing established quality standards would ensure a stronger presence of Bangladeshi crafts in global branding.

"BSCIC has played a significant role in creating entrepreneurs across the country since its establishment and continues to provide training, advice and skill development support at district and regional levels," he said.

He expressed confidence that the training will empower the female trainees with advanced skills and knowledge, helping them contribute to establishing Satranji as a recognised global brand.

General Manager of the Dhaka BSCIC Development Department Jasmine Nahar and Deputy General Manager of the Rangpur District Office Md Ehsanul Haque also addressed the event as special guests.
