
RANGPUR, Dec 30, 2025 (BSS) - Vice-chancellor (VC) of Begum Rokeya
University, Rangpur (BRUR) Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali has expressed deep
shock at the death of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda
Zia.
In a condolence message today, the VC said Begum Khaleda Zia, the first
female Prime Minister of Bangladesh, was a symbol of uncompromising
leadership, a pioneer of the restoration of multi-party democracy.
She breathed her last while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the
capital at about 6 am today (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun).
Prof Ali prayed for the forgiveness of the departed soul and expressed deep
condolences to the bereaved family, relatives, colleagues and countless
admirers.
In his condolence message, he said Begum Khaleda Zia is a unique personality
in the political history of Bangladesh.
She has shown determination, wisdom and courage in running the country during
her three-term tenure as the elected Prime Minister.
She has played an uncompromising role in protecting democracy, national
sovereignty and the rights of the people throughout her life.
Despite political adversities and oppression, she has never deviated from her
ideal which has elevated her to a unique height.
The Vice-chancellor said that in addition to running the state, her
government's various initiatives in the development of education, health and
infrastructure have played an important role in the progress of the country.
She believed that an educated and aware citizenry is the foundation of a
strong state.
Prof Ali said that as a woman leader, she has upheld the status of Bangladesh
in South Asian politics.
Her contribution in re-establishing parliamentary democracy, leading the
democratic movement and developing a strong opposition political movement
will be remembered forever in history.
Her political foresight and struggling life will serve as a source of
inspiration for future generations.
"Begum Khaleda Zia's contribution and memory will remain eternal in the
history of Bangladesh," the VC said, adding that her courage, sacrifice and
leadership will always be remembered with respect by the nation.
