CHATTOGRAM, Dec 30, 2025 (BSS) – Chattogram City Corporation Mayor and former city BNP president Dr Shahadat Hossain has expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Bangladesh’s first female Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

In a condolence message, the mayor highlighted Begum Khaleda Zia’s significant contributions to Bangladesh’s democratic politics.

“She was a fearless champion of the people’s right to vote, independence and sovereignty. Her leadership played a pivotal role in establishing democracy, national sovereignty and safeguarding the rights of the people,” he said.

Dr Shahadat described her as a great guardian and an experienced stateswoman, saying the nation has suffered an irreparable loss with her passing. He extended his heartfelt condolences to her bereaved family members, party leaders and activists, and the nation, praying for the eternal peace of her departed soul and her place in Jannatul Firdous.

The mayor also acknowledged Begum Khaleda Zia’s courageous and historic role in restoring democracy in Bangladesh following the martyrdom of her husband, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.

“At a time of deep political crisis and uncertainty, she boldly assumed leadership, mobilised the people and stood firm in restoring multi-party democracy, voting rights and constitutional governance,” he said.

Dr Shahadat added that her leadership would be remembered as a significant and inspiring chapter in Bangladesh’s democratic movement. He urged all political parties and citizens to show restraint, patience and unity during this period of national mourning.
