Deer rescued from poachers' trap in Sundarbans

KHULNA, Jan 11, 2025 (BSS) - Forest guards have rescued another spotted deer 
from a poachers' trap in the Jhongra forest area under the Chandpai Range of 
the Sundarbans East Forest Division, marking the second such rescue within 
three days.

The deer was recovered on Sunday noon during a routine foot patrol in the 
Jhongra Forest Patrol Outpost area.
 
Along with the animal, forest guards also recovered three single wire snares 
locally known as "mala" traps. After being freed from the trap, the deer was 
released back into the forest.

According to forest department sources, a patrol team led by Forester Nazrul 
Islam, officer-in-charge of the Jhongra Forest Patrol Outpost, spotted the 
trapped deer while patrolling the forest adjacent to Kalir Khal area of the 
Sundarbans today.

During further search operations in the area, the forest guards recovered 
three more single wire snares set by poachers.
 
The trapped deer was immediately rescued and released into the Sundarbans. 
The patrol team also dismantled a makeshift hunting platform locally known as 
a "tong ghar" built by poachers in the Jhongra forest area.

Earlier on January 8, forest guards rescued another spotted deer from a 
poachers' trap in the Mrigamari forest area and released it into the wild.

Confirming the incident, Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) of Chandpai 
Range Dipan Chandra Das, said the deer, rescued from the trap in the Jhongra 
forest area, has been safely released back into the Sundarbans.
