Pickup van-auto-rickshaw collision kills youth in Chandpur

CHANDPUR, Jan 14, 2026 (BSS): A youth was killed and two others were injured in a head-on collision between a pickup van and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in the Wireless area of Chandpur town last night.

The accident occurred around 11 pm at Wireless Mor in front of Tarpur Chandi School, police said.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station Fayez Ahmed confirmed the incident this morning.

The deceased was identified as Md Shahjalal, 24, son of late Shah Alam of Molla Bari in Paschim Rajargaon village under Rajargaon Union of Hajiganj upazila in the district.

One of the injured passengers was identified as Md Momin, 19, son of Quddus of the same area. The identity of the other injured passenger could not be ascertained immediately.

Police and eyewitnesses said Shahjalal and the other passengers were travelling in the auto-rickshaw from Chandpur town towards Baburhat. When the vehicle reached the spot, it collided head-on with an oncoming pickup van, causing the auto-rickshaw to overturn and leaving its passengers critically injured.

Sources at the emergency department of Chandpur Sadar Hospital said local people rescued the injured and took them to the hospital. After primary treatment, Shahjalal was referred to Dhaka for advanced medical care, but he died on the way at Daudkandi.

Injured Md Momin is currently undergoing treatment at Chandpur Sadar Hospital, while the other injured passenger has been referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Emergency department physician Rana Saha said Shahjalal was referred to Dhaka due to severe internal injuries and later died on the way.

Sub-Inspector Mujibur Rahman of Chandpur Sadar Police Station said the body was brought to Chandpur Sadar Hospital where an inquest report was prepared.

OC Fayez Ahmed said police seized both the pickup van and the auto-rickshaw along with their licences.

No arrest has been made so far in connection with the accident. 
The body will be handed over to the family after completion of legal formalities.
