Ex-UP chairman, 7 others sent to jail for embezzling dev funds

CHATTOGRAM, Jan 21, 2026 (BSS) – The Chattogram Divisional Special Judge Court here today ordered the jail custody of eight accused, including the former chairman of Narayanhat Union Parishad under Fatikchari upazila of the district, on charges of embezzling funds of development projects.

Deputy Director of the ACC’s district integrated office Md Jafar Sadek Shibli filed a case against eight people, including former UP chairman Abu Jafar Mahmud Chowdhury, for misappropriating funds allocated for six development projects without executing the projects.

The other accused include former Narayanhat Union Parishad secretaries Sudhir Kumar Pal, Md Gias Uddin and Md Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury; Md Tayyab, proprietor of contracting firm M/s Tayyab Enterprise; Md Muzaffar Kamal Chowdhury, proprietor of M/s MK Enterprise; Md Rafiqul Islam; and Md Abu Taher, proprietor of M/s Haji Ahmed Hossain Mir Enterprise.

ACC Chattogram Deputy Director (DD) Subel Ahmed said the accused were sent to jail as they surrendered before the court.

According to the complaint, the chairman, secretaries and contractors, in collusion with one another, embezzled Tk 7,25,467 allocated for six development projects. In addition, the former chairman is accused of embezzling Tk 4,92,000 collected as rent from shops.
