SUNAMGANJ, March 7, 2026 (BSS) - A canal excavation programme has been inaugurated at Aktapara Baro Haor under Dargapasha Union in Shantiganj Upazila of the district.

Lawmaker from Sunamganj-3 constituency Mohammad Koysor Ahmed inaugurated the programme on Friday afternoon.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Shahjahan, Project Implementation Officer Jahangir Alam and Dargapasha Union Parishad Chairman Sufi Mia, among others, were present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, the lawmaker said Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman first introduced the canal excavation programme for the welfare of farmers, adding that the current Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government is continuing the initiative.

He said the initiative aims to restore lost canals and rivers across the country, which would benefit agriculture and fisheries.

However, he said excavating canals will be difficult as many of them have been encroached upon and must be recovered first.
