TANGAIL, April 14, 2026 (BSS) - Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman today urged the countrymen to remain alert against those opposing BNP's welfare programmes.

"We must remain vigilant against all those parties, against all those people who want to spread confusion . . . and those who will try to obstruct the government’s welfare oriented programmes," he said.

Tarique Rahman made the remarks while addressing a student rally at Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University in Santosh here this afternoon.

About the opposition party's role in parliament, he said "What have we seen in Parliament? Those, who have got only a small number of votes, are now demanding that whatever they say must be accepted".

About the July Charter, the Prime Minister said, "We want to clearly tell the countrymen once again that when Dr Muhammad Yunus invited the political parties to sign the July Charter at the South Plaza of Parliament, the BNP was the first to sign it".

"So, we will implement every letter, every word, every line of the July Charter that BNP has signed," he said, adding that BNP will implement the charter that was signed by itself and the other political parties.

The BNP chairman, however, said, "We have seen those who are now in the opposition were in a dilemma whether they would sign or not at that time".

Another party of them even did not sign at first and only signed after the election, he said, adding, "We can ask those who are shouting about the July movement, if they are so emotional to the movement, why did they not sign first?"

Warning against any attempt to obstruct government's programmes, Tarique Rahman said, "BNP, along with the people, will resist those who obstruct the public welfare-oriented programmes, including canal excavation, Family Card, Farmer Card and the initiative to produce professional players."

Urging all to remain alert against any move to destabilise the country, he said, "We have to remain vigilant, because the ghost of authoritarianism is slowly creeping up on them again", and questioned, "Are they trying to create anarchy in the country again?"

About the Sherpur-3 election and the Bogura-6 by-election held on April 9, the Prime Minister said there might have been one or two minor untoward incidents.

"After the polls, I reviewed newspapers thoroughly . . . there were no major complaints in any of the national newspapers. People are living peacefully and the situation is calm where elections were held," he said.

"But where is the tension? In Baitul Mukarram area. You are certainly aware of who are trying to make the situation unstable," Tarique Rahman said, adding, though authoritarian rule has fallen, its influence still exists in the country.

"So, we have to remain alert so that the public-oriented programmes are not hindered," he said, adding, "In the past, we have seen how politics was obstructed by talking about changing the people's fate and how democracy was obstructed".

"We know those who worked against the interests of the people . . . we know what they have done. So we have to remain vigilant," the Prime Minister said.

"This Bangladesh is our final destination. We were born here and we will die here. We have no home abroad. Since this country is our only home, we have to build it together. We, along with the people, have to build Bangladesh as we aspire to see," Tarique Rahman said.

Urging all once again to remain alert, he said, "Standing beside the mazar of Mawlana Bhasani, who always spoke for farmers and labourers, we should remain aware so that no one can hinder the interests of the people for whom Mawlana Bhasani used to talk."

Liberation War Affairs Minister Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku and lawmaker Abdus Salam Pintu were present on the occasion.

Earlier, the Prime Minister offered ziarat at the grave of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani in Santosh.

After the rally, he left here for Dhaka by road.
