NAOGAON, April 13, 2026 (BSS) - A long-neglected 750-meter canal in Badalgachhi upazila is set to be revived, as authorities officially launched its re-excavation on Monday afternoon.

The canal, stretching from Chapainagar to Adhaipur, had remained silted and unusable for years, causing recurring problems for local farmers.

Member of Parliament for Naogaon-3 and Joint General Secretary of the Central Krishak Dal Fazle Huda Babul inaugurated the re-excavation work.

The initiative comes in response to long-standing demands from residents and is being implemented by the upazila administration.

The project, funded under the 2025–2026 fiscal year through a special allocation from the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, has an estimated cost of Taka 25 lakh. It is also aligned with the government’s broader development agenda tied to the Prime Minister’s election commitments.

Speaking at the programme, lawmaker Babul emphasized the government’s focus on rural development and agriculture. He said that restoring canals, beels, and other water bodies would significantly improve water management, reduce waterlogging, and enhance irrigation facilities-- ultimately boosting agricultural production.

The event was chaired by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Israt Jahan and attended by local officials, political leaders, and community members.

The re-excavation is expected to improve drainage across several hundred acres of land. Officials also anticipate positive impacts on biodiversity conservation and fish resources in the area.
