Schoolgirl dies after headscarf gets entangled in auto-van wheel in Rangpur

RANGPUR, April 29, 2026 (BSS) - A 12-year-old schoolgirl died after her headscarf became entangled in the wheel of a moving auto-van in Pirgachha upazila of the district this morning.

The deceased, Safia Akhter, a sixth-grade student of Kaliganj High School, was the daughter of daily wage worker Sujan Mia.

According to local sources, Safia was travelling with her family in an auto-van towards Pirgachha Bazar. When the vehicle reached the helipad area of Itakumari union, her headscarf suddenly got caught in the wheel of the moving van. She suffered severe injuries and was quickly rescued.

She was taken to Pirgachha Upazila Health Complex where attending doctors declared her dead.

Officer-in-charge of Pirgachha Police Station AKM Khandaker Mohibbul Islam confirmed the matter and said legal procedures were completed and the body was handed over to the family for burial.
