
BAGERHAT, May 7, 2026 (BSS) - The 53rd World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day was observed in Bagerhat today with a call to strengthen humanitarian services for disaster-prone people.
Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, Bagerhat Unit, organized discussion, prize distribution and cultural programmes at Independence Park marking the day.
Acting Principal of Bagerhat Government Acharya Prafulla Chandra College Professor Md. Jahangir Ali attended the programme as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, he said the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement has been playing a vital role in serving humanity across the world.
He highly appreciated the role of Red Crescent volunteers during natural disasters and humanitarian crises.
Speakers said Red Crescent volunteers have long been working in coastal Bagerhat in disaster preparedness, evacuation, first aid and distribution of food and safe water.
They also recalled the contributions of volunteers during cyclones Sidr, Aila, Amphan and Remal.
Among others, Central BNP Executive Member Advocate Wahiduzzaman Dipu, Public Prosecutor Advocate Mahbub Morshed Lalon, Bagerhat 250-bed Hospital Superintendent Dr Asim Kumar Samaddar and Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and ICT) Joydev Chakraborty spoke at the programme.
