KHULNA, May 18, 2026 (BSS) - Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju today called for coordinated efforts among all stakeholders to accelerate the development of the Khulna region, with special emphasis on resolving waterlogging and strengthening child welfare services in the city.
He made the remarks while addressing two separate programmes held in the city.
A courtesy meeting was held at Nagar Bhaban between Khulna-5 lawmaker Mohammad Ali Asgar Lobby and the KCC administrator, during which they exchanged views on key development issues in the greater Khulna area.
Highlighting the persistent waterlogging problem during the monsoon season, the administrator said most of the city's internal canals pass through Dumuria upazila before draining into nearby rivers.
He stressed that maintaining uninterrupted water flow in these canals is essential for the quick drainage of rainwater from the city.
He sought cooperation from the lawmaker in ensuring the smooth flow of water through the canals in Dumuria upazila. The MP agreed and pledged to work jointly in preparing and implementing development plans for the wider Khulna region.
Earlier in the day, speaking at a meeting at CSS Ava Centre in the city, Manju said the country had long been deprived of good governance under the 'fascist government', but a democratic government had now begun its journey with new development initiatives.
The meeting was organised by World Vision Bangladesh under its Khulna City Area Programme, where research findings and development activities in Khulna city were presented.
The programme focuses on child health, education, protection, safety and family income generation across 31 wards of the city.
Manju also said awareness on child marriage has increased compared to previous years, although child labour has not yet been fully eliminated despite efforts by government agencies.
He stressed the need for stronger coordination between KCC and non-government organisations to prevent child labour and reduce primary school dropout rates. He also mentioned plans to open a dedicated branch at Nagar Bhaban to strengthen such coordination.
The meeting was chaired by World Vision Bangladesh Senior Director (Operations) Chandan Z Gomez.
Among others, KCC Chief Health Officer Dr Sharif Shammiul Islam spoke at the event, while Senior Manager of the Khulna Area Programme Liton Mondal delivered the welcome address at CSS Ava Centre.
