
RAJSHAHI, July 9, 2026 (BSS) - World Environment Day was celebrated in Rajshahi in a festive atmosphere.
Marking the occasion, the programme was inaugurated this morning by releasing balloons and festoons in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office.
Later, a colorful rally was brought out jointly organized by the Rajshahi District Administration and the Department of Environment.
The rally started from the Deputy Commissioner's office premises, paraded through the main streets of the city, and ended at the District Shilpakala Academy.
Officials from government and non-government offices, teachers, students, NGO representatives, environmental activists, representatives of industrial establishments, and people from various professions participated in it.
After the rally, a discussion meeting was held at the District Shilpakala Academy auditorium.
Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner Kazi Shahidul Islam presided over the meeting. Department of Environment, Rajshahi Deputy Director Tasmina Khatun delivered the welcome speech.
In his speech, Deputy Commissioner Kazi Shahidul Islam said that protecting the environment is one of the essential conditions for human survival. Awareness and collective effort from everyone are needed to tackle the adverse impacts of climate change.
He said that planting trees alone is not enough; proper care of the planted trees must also be ensured.
Changes must be brought to daily habits to prevent plastic, air, and water pollution. He urged everyone to come forward to build Rajshahi as a greener, cleaner, and more livable city.
Also present at the event were Zila Parishad Administrator Advocate Ershad Ali Isha; Superintendent of Police Naimul Hasan; Deputy Police Commissioner Gaziur Rahman and Additional Superintendent of Police Helena Akte.
New Govt. Degree College Principal Professor Dr. Shikha Sarkar, Director of the Institute of Environmental Science, University of Rajshahi, Prof Golam Mostofa and Assistant Director of the Department of Environment Kabir Hossain were present.
In the discussion, speakers emphasized raising public awareness to protect the environment.
They said that due to climate change, rising temperatures, irregular rainfall, natural disasters, risks to agricultural production, and negative impacts on public health are increasing.
To address these challenges, they called for pollution control, eco-friendly living, and more tree planting.
As part of the programme, tree saplings were distributed among students from various educational institutions in the district.
Officials from government offices, Department of Environment officials, NGO representatives, teachers, students, industrial representatives, and media personnel attended the meeting.
