Three madrasa students drown while bathing in river in Narsingdi

NARSINGDI, July 16, 2026 (BSS) - Three female madrasa students drowned after being swept away by a strong current while bathing in a river in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi on Wednesday noon.

Three other children were rescued from the river  with injuries.

The incident took place around noon in the Kakon River at Borokanda village under Chanderkandi Union.

Md. Mujibur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Raipura Police Station confirmed the incident. 

The deceased were identified as Tabia, 13, daughter of Shamim Mia,  Ayesha, 9, and Jannat, 9, daughters of two different men named Rubel Mia, all residents of Borokanda village. 

They were students of the local Gausia Noor-e-Madina Women's Madrasa.

According to police and local sources, six children went to bathe together in the Kakon River, a distributary of the Meghna River, near their homes. 

At one stage, they were caught in a strong current and began to drown.    

Hearing their cries for help, local residents rushed to the spot, rescued all six children from the river, and took them to a nearby hospital.

The attending doctors declared Tabia, Ayesha, and Jannat dead on arrival. The identities of the three injured children were not immediately available.
