Claim of crashing aircraft with 210 Hajj pilgrims is false: Factwatch

DHAKA, May 29, 2025 (BSS) –  Factwatch, a Bangladesh based private fact-checking platform,  has identified the viral video- of a  plane crash claiming death of 210 Hajj pilgrims lately in Mauritania as a rumor. 

As per the viral video and claim, a Hajj flight from the African country of Mauritania to Saudi Arabia has crashed this year, killing 210 aboard passengers.

According to Factwatch investigation report, the viral video is at least six years old and is an incident from Indonesia. Apart from this, there has been no record of plane crash in Mauritania lately. 

“A group is systematically spreading rumors, misinformation, and disinformation about Bangladesh, including from within the country and abroad, saying it has identified 296 rumors on social media and internet platforms in April,” the report reads. 

The report noted that their investigation team has found evidences that most false information and rumors are being spread from Indian media and social media platforms and the rate surged since last year.
