ZAGREB, Feb 26, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - Croatian lawmakers on Wednesday stripped a legislator of his immunity amid an investigation into alleged possession of illegal firearms.
Josip Dabro -- a leading member of the nationalist right-wing Homeland Movement (DP) -- resigned in January as agriculture minister, after a video surfaced of him shooting from a moving car.
The DP is a junior partner in Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic's coalition government, which holds a razor-thin majority in the parliament.
Dabro has been embroiled in controversy since the video was shared, showing him sitting in the passenger seat of a moving car, singing to loud music and firing a pistol into the dark.
Later another video surfaced with Dabro standing next to a cornfield and firing an assault rifle.
Prosecutors have not formally charged Dabro but are investigating possible possession and use of "illegal weapons" and "endangering the security of a child".
The second allegation pertains to reports that the legislator was instructing his son in the use of firearms and explosives, according to a parliamentary committee.
Prosecutors are calling for Dabro to be detained during the investigation.
Dabro and his party have said the investigation was a response to his accusations of corruption within Croatia's state-run forest management company.
