BOGURA, Jan 30, 2026 (BSS) – Abidur Rahman Sohail, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami candidate for the upcoming national parliamentary election in the Bogura-6 (Sadar) constituency, has pledged to build a corruption-free and moral society, emphasizing his desire for a ‘new Bangladesh’.
In this constituency, Abidur Rahman Sohail, Ameer of Bogura city Jamaat, will be the main contender against BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman. Abidur Rahman was previously elected as the Vice-Chairman of Bogura Sadar Upazila in 2014, and the Jamaat-e-Islami candidate had won this parliamentary seat in the 1986 election boycotted by BNP.
In an exclusive interview with BSS Bogura District Correspondent Kalam Azad, Jamaat candidate Abidur Rahman Sohail shared his thoughts on the election, his promises, and the current political situation.
BSS: What are your election promises for the local voters?
Abidur Rahman Sohail: I have spoken to people while campaigning for the party symbol scales. Jamaat-e-Islami has established honest leadership across the country. Under this leadership, our Ameer of Jamaat has created a roadmap for forming a modern, humane, and welfare-oriented state. We are promising a corruption-free and moral society. Additionally, priority is being given to education, health, a drug-free society, and humanitarian development based on Islamic values.
We will implement what is stated in our election manifesto. Regarding local problems in Bogura, the most pressing issue I see is the traffic congestion, which we will resolve. We will renovate the dilapidated roads.
Bogura is often referred to as a city of terror; 8 to 10 murders occur here every month. Bogura should have become a City Corporation a long time ago, which has not happened yet, and a university is needed. If we come to power, we will initiate these projects.
BSS: What are your instructions regarding the code of conduct and campaigning?
Abidur Rahman Sohail: Jamaat-e-Islami always believes in peaceful campaigning while adhering to the code of conduct. Leaders and activists have been instructed to maintain decent behavior and harmony with the public. We have given instructions not to cause unnecessary noise pollution by using excessive microphones anywhere. Members of Jamaat-e-Islami love discipline; it is our belief that they will not be involved in any kind of violence.
BSS: What is your position on the referendum and the July Charter?
Abidur Rahman Sohail: I started my election campaign by visiting the graves of Martyr Ratul and Martyr Shimul in Bogura. If they had not played a role in the July movement and become martyrs, perhaps we would have had to participate in a rigged election under the control of Sheikh Hasina's government again in 2029.
The July Charter, achieved through the blood of these martyrs, reflects the aspirations of the masses. Jamaat views taking the direct opinion of the people through the referendum positively.
BSS: What are your expectations regarding the upcoming parliamentary election?
Abidur Rahman Sohail: My expectation is that if voters can exercise their voting rights without hindrance, the results reflect the true verdict of the people. It is my hope that a just and welfare-oriented state will be established through this election.
The constituency, comprised of Bogura municipality and 11 unions, has a total of 454,043 voters. Among them, there are 231,237 female voters, 222,796 male voters, and 10 third-gender voters.
Other candidates contesting the seat include Abdullah Al Waki of JSD (Star), Abu Noman Md. Mamunur Rashid of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (Hand fan), and Dilruba Nuri of BSD (Ladder).
