SANGSAD BHABAN, April 9, 2026 (BSS) - The Jatiya Sangsad today accepted a notice from an opposition lawmaker regarding a "malicious" comment directed at him inside the parliament last week and referred the matter to the parliamentary standing committee on privileges for further investigation.

The notice was submitted under Section 169 of the rules of procedure by Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis candidate Syed Uddin Ahmad Hanzala, with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed presiding over the session.

"The notice raised by the opposition lawmaker has been sent to the parliamentary standing committee on privileges to examine, investigate, and report on the allegation," the Speaker said while accepting the notice.

Addressing the House, Hanzala said, "As a member of parliament, it is the Jatiya Sangsad's responsibility to protect my life, honor, and dignity within the House. The malicious comment made against me has already circulated on social media, causing serious social humiliation and violating my special privileges."

He added, "I did not wish to speak on the floor merely for personal reasons. This is a matter for all, as the derogatory comment used against me is a fascist term that has been employed for the last seventeen years to dishonor respected individuals. I seek the Speaker's intervention to protect the honor of all parliament members, whether ruling or opposition."

Hanzala had first raised the allegation on April 2, stating that unidentified persons made the comment while he was passing through the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad to attend the Namaj-e-Janaza of the Speaker's spouse on March 30.

Standing on a point of order in the House, Hanzala said, "While attending the Namaj-e-Janaza at South Plaza, someone commented, 'a militant lawmaker is going, and it is unexpected.' This was directed at me because I wear a turban and dress according to the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). My attire should not be seen as a symbol of militancy."

He urged the Speaker, the Home Minister, and the sergeant-at-arms to review CCTV footage and investigate to identify the person responsible.

Hanzala also expressed concern that the comment, spread on social media, aimed to defame both opposition lawmakers and the parliament, and called for a thorough investigation.
