SANGSAD BHABAN, June 24, 2026 (BSS) – Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury today informed the Parliament that the total number of bank accounts in the country has now reached 19,32,51,232, according to statistics from Bangladesh Bank.

He disclosed the information in response to a written question tabled by ruling party lawmaker Sheikh Farid Ahmed of Chandpur-3 constituency.

The minister said that of the total accounts, about 17.80 crore are savings accounts; while around 1.53 crore are loan accounts.

He noted that the government has formulated the National Financial Inclusion Strategy (NFIS) with the goal of bringing all adult citizens under financial services coverage by 2026. At present, the country’s financial inclusion rate stands at 64.50 percent.

The finance minister said that financial inclusion encompasses accounts maintained with banks, financial institutions, mobile financial services (MFS), insurance companies, the capital market, microfinance institutions and other authorised financial service providers.

He further said that the implementation period of the current NFIS is ending in June 2026. Therefore, considering the opinions and requirements of various stakeholders in the financial sector, the government has taken an initiative to formulate the National Financial Inclusion Strategy-2 (NFIS-2) to raise the financial inclusion rate to 100 percent.

According to the minister, NFIS-2 will be implemented from July 2026 to June 2031.
