Husband gets life imprisonment for killing wife in Meherpur

MEHERPUR, May 7, 2026 (BSS) - A court here on Wednesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his wife over a dowry dispute in Sadar upazila in 2012.

Judge Ali Masud Sheikh of the district Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict.

The courts also fined convict Saju Hossain, 35, Taka 20,000, with an additional six months' imprisonment in default of payment.

According to the prosecution, convict Saju hacked his wife with a sharp weapon on December 4, 2012, over a dowry dispute at their residence in Notunpara area of Sadar upazila. 

Critically injured Dolly Khatun was first taken to Meherpur General Hospital and later shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital as her condition deteriorates.

Later, on December 10 she succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.

State lawyer Mostafizur Rahman Tuhin said the victim's mother Shefali Khatun filed a murder case with Meherpur Sadar Police Station following the incident.

After investigation, police submitted a charge sheet to the court. During the trial, 11 witnesses testified before the tribunal.
