Husband to die for killing wife in Jamalpur

JAMALPUR, July 20, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced a man to death for killing his wife over dowry of Tk one lakh  in 2012. 

The court also fined him Taka Five lakh.

The convicted person was identified as Md Hafizul , 25 son of late Prodhan at village Merur Char in Bakshiganj Upazila of the district.

According to the prosecution story, Md Hafizul married Hanufa Begun,19, without the consent of his father Md Kamal Hossain in 2012 . Kamal Hossain a resident in Vola district who lived at Mirpur in Dhaka accepted the marriage giving valuables. After marriage Hanufa stayed at her husband's home in Bakshiganj.

But the greedy Hafizul demanded cash of Tk 50 thousand to Honufa's family who gave Tk 30 thousand. After some days he also demanded a dowry of Tk one lakh and threatened to kill her if not fulfilled.

On September,4, 2012 just after 7 months of marriage Hafizul strangulated Hanufa to death as his demand of dowry was not fulfilled.

Following the murder Amena Begum mother of Hanufa filed a murder case with Bakshiganj Police Station.

Judge, Woman and Child repression prevention tribunal -1, Muhammad Abdur Rahim after examining 7 prosecution witnesses and other relevant documents found Hafizul guilty and gave the judgement.

Public Prosecutor Advocate Md Fazlul Haque confirmed the verdict.
