DHAKA, May 10, 2025 (BSS) - Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul today said necessary measures are being taken to form Truth and Reconciliation Commission in the country.
"Truth and Reconciliation commission will be formed and necessary measures are being taken for this purpose," he said.
The adviser revealed this while addressing as the chair at the meeting of views exchange on "Disappearance Prevention and Remedies Ordinance, 2025" (Second Draft) at the auditorium of Judicial Administration Training Institute here.
"There is an urgent need for Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission. It would have been beneficial if such a commission had existed in our country since 1972," he said.
He continued, "We're will frame Truth and Reconciliation Commission. To advance this initiative, Honorable Chief Justice and I, along with a delegation, are traveling to South Africa, accompanied by UNDP representatives and others."
Asif Nazul stated, "The number of those responsible for heinous crimes such as enforced disappearances, murders and crimes against humanity is not large. We must take appropriate measures to punish them appropriately and sufficiently."
He added, "And to establish that they (the criminals) are a separate part of this nation, we must form Truth and Reconciliation Committee."
He went on, saying "We aim to strengthen both this law and the Enforced Disappearance Commission. We believe this is part of the ongoing reform process that our Chief Adviser often refers to. There is considerable discussion about improving this law as much as possible."
"Our nation will not be liberated by fighting forever and we will have to rise up by building unity. We will consider the opinions of all the discussants with great importance," said the law adviser.
He said that they're determined to do whatever is necessary to properly judge those who have done all these things and give them the maximum punishment through legal process.
"At the same time, we will form such laws and Truth and Reconciliation Commission so that such crimes never happen again in the future," he added.
Writer, online activist and political analyst Pinaki Bhattacharya joined the event virtually as the key discussant. He expressed his views on several clauses of the draft law.
