DHAKA, Nov 24, 2025 (BSS) - Former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is currently under intensive observation at Evercare Hospital in the capital.

She was admitted to the hospital Sunday night around 8 pm after experiencing sudden respiratory distress. A medical board led by specialist physician Professor Shahbuddin Talukder is overseeing her treatment.

Professor FM Siddiqui, another member of the medical board, told journalists that Begum Zia is suffering from a chest infection, which has caused severe breathing difficulties. Several diagnostic tests have already been conducted and doctors have decided to keep her under close observation for the next 24 hours.

From London, Tarique Rahman and his wife Zubaida Rahman have been closely monitoring her condition. Syeda Samila Rahman, widow of Khaleda Zia's late son Arafat Rahman Koko, has been at her bedside.

Begum Zia has long been battling multiple health complications, including liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, cardiovascular issues and diabetes.

She traveled to London on January 7 for advanced treatment and returned to Bangladesh on May 6 after a 117-day stay.

The BNP has called upon the nation to pray for her speedy recovery.
