FM seeks ways to revitalize SAARC

DHAKA, Feb 24, 2026 (BSS) - Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman today sought views from SAARC Secretary General Md. Golam Sarwar on revitalizing the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and enhancing Bangladesh’s proactive role in the regional body.

Tge discussion was held when the SAARC Secretary General paid a courtesy call on the Foreign Minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this afternoon.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Sarwar said SAARC was included in the election manifesto of the present government and that the new administration is attaching special importance to SAARC-related issues.

“I met the Foreign Minister and presented a detailed overview of SAARC to him,” he said.

The Secretary General said he briefed the Minister on the current state of the regional organization and its ongoing activities. 

“He wanted to know how SAARC can be revitalized. Based on the present condition of SAARC and how it is functioning, discussions were held on how the government can play a leading role in SAARC in the future,” he added.

Responding to a query about the SAARC Summit, Golam Sarwar said, “All issues were discussed.”

On Monday, the SAARC Secretary General also called on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam at the foreign ministry.
