
CHATTOGRAM, Feb 24, 2026 (BSS):- Three persons including a mother and her son succumbed to their burn injuries today at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
A total of nine persons have been severely injured in yesterday’s gas explosion at Halishahar in the city and were sent to National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital last night and today.
Of the victims , Nurjahan Akter Rani, 40 , wife of Shakawat Hossain and their 16-year old boy Shawon have expired on Monday night while Sameer Ahmed Suman , 40 , younger brother of Shakawat died this afternoon at the specialized hospital in Dhaka , hospital and family sources said.
Nine persons of Shakawat’s family sustained severe burn injury that suspectedly occurred following a devastating explosion and subsequent fire from gas leakage at the kitchen at the 3rd floor flat of 6-storied Halima Manzil in city’s Halishahar area at around 4.30 a.m on Monday night.
Shakawat is a businessman and resides along with his family at the rented flat. Shakawat , 46, also received grievous burn injury and now along with others undergoing treatment at National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
All were shifted to Dhaka Burn Institute yesterday for improved treatment.
Shakawat’s younger brother Sameer Ahmed Suman had been living in Portugal and came Bangladesh recently. He along with his family had recently came to Chattogram from their Bagmara village under Barura upazila in Cumilla district to meet with his elder brother’s family.
The explosion took place when gas accumulated inside the apartment after leakage from kitchen stove and ignited when the stove was switched on and lit for cooking for Sehri.
Hospital sources said the condition of six others is critical.
,Meanwhile, Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Asadul Habib Dulu , Health Minister Sarder Md Shakawat Hossain and newly elected lawmaker from Chattogram -10 constituency Sayeed Al Noman MP visited the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery to see the victims who have been undergoing treatment at Ward 36 of the Institute, today morning.
The ministers and lawmaker talked to the doctors on progress of the treatment and directed them to ensure optimum services so that the victims get temporary respite and fully cure soon .
The ministers also talked to the members of bereaved family , conveyed their sympathy and assured the relatives of victim family of maximum cooperation from the government.
