DHAKA, Feb 25, 2026 (BSS) - Newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir formally took charge as the head of Bangladesh Police on Wednesday morning.

On his arrival at the Police Headquarters in Dhaka, a well-equipped contingent of police personnel accorded him a guard of honor, marking the beginning of his tenure as the country's top police official, said a press release of Police Headquarters

The Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday issued a notification appointing Fakir as the new IGP. 

He succeeds outgoing IGP Baharul Alam.

Prior to the appointment, Fakir served as Additional Inspector General (IG) of the Armed Police Battalion (APBN). 

Fakir joined Bangladesh Police as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in the 15th BCS (Police) batch on November 15, 1995.

Throughout his distinguished career, he has served in various important capacities with professionalism and integrity. 

He worked as Superintendent of Police (SP) in Netrokona, Feni, and Magura districts. He also served as Commandant of RRF Sylhet and Commander of 3 APBN Khulna, 5 APBN Dhaka, and 7 APBN Sylhet. As Deputy Inspector General (DIG), he carried out responsibilities at Police Headquarters and SPBN.

Fakir has represented Bangladesh Police in United Nations peacekeeping missions in Kosovo and Ivory Coast, earning recognition for his contributions. He has also participated in various official visits and training programs in countries including the United States and China.

Currently, he is serving as the Acting President of the Bangladesh Police Service Association. 

He is also the General Secretary of the 15th BCS Forum and Convener of the 15th BCS (Police) Batch. 

Additionally, he is a member of Officers Club Dhaka and Khulna Club and is involved in various socio-cultural organizations.

Born on April 5, 1968, in a respectable Muslim family under Sadar Police Station of Bagerhat District, 

Fakir completed his B.Com (Hons), M.Com, and MBA in Management from Dhaka University.

In his personal life, he is married and blessed with a son and a daughter.
