Algeria endorses Bangladesh foreign minister for UNGA presidency

DHAKA, Mar 3, 2026 (BSS) - Algeria has expressed full support for Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman as a candidate for the presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdelouahab Saidani revealed the information at a meeting with Prime Minister's Adviser on Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) here this morning, Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony told BSS.

Held in a very cordial and warm atmosphere, he said, the meeting focused on various aspects of the existing friendly relations between Bangladesh and Algeria.

The meeting particularly put emphasis on strengthening cooperation in trade and investment, energy collaboration, education and cultural exchange, as well as mutual support in multilateral forums, Rony added.

During the meeting, he said, the Prime Minister's adviser on foreign Affairs expressed Bangladesh's keen interest in further deepening and broadening relations with Algeria. 

Humayun Kabir reaffirmed the commitment of the Bangladesh government to expanding bilateral cooperation for the welfare of the peoples of both countries.

Besides, the Algerian envoy conveyed his country's strong interest in enhancing bilateral ties and expressed hope for undertaking joint initiatives in various promising sectors.

Rony said both sides expressed optimism about further expanding cooperation through high-level visits and regular dialogues in the future.
