Treatment underway for injured wild elephant following PM's directive-Photo: BSS

DHAKA, July 11, 2026 (BSS) - Treatment is underway for a seriously injured wild elephant in Teknaf of Cox's Bazar following the directive of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Around 12:30 pm today, the wild elephant was critically injured in the Shiyaillya Ghona area under the Teknaf Sadar Beat of the Teknaf Range of Cox's Bazar South Forest Division.

According to preliminary information, the elephant was crossing a steep hillside in search of food when a section of the hill collapsed due to continuous heavy rainfall. 

As a result, the elephant fell approximately 300 feet into a rocky stream below and sustained severe injuries.

Immediately after receiving news of the incident, the Prime Minister directed all relevant agencies to take the necessary measures to ensure the highest standard of treatment for the injured elephant. 

Following the directive, Forest Department officials quickly reached the site and began rescue and treatment operations.

Prime Minister's Assistant Press Secretary KM Nazmul Haque confirmed the matter.

He said the elephant's condition is currently extremely critical. It has sustained a severe abdominal injury, one of its hind legs has been broken, and it has suffered multiple serious injuries across its body. Due to the intense pain, the elephant is unable to stand.

Ignoring adverse weather conditions and heavy rainfall, Nazmul said, a team of specialist veterinarians is working tirelessly to provide treatment. 

A veterinary surgeon from the Teknaf Upazila Livestock Office is providing primary medical care, he added.

At present, the specialist medical team is performing necessary surgical treatment on the elephant's abdominal wound, including suturing and other emergency medical procedures, the assistant press secretary said.

He further said that the Prime Minister's Additional Press Secretary, Atikur Rahman Ruman, is closely monitoring the progress of the treatment and coordinating with all relevant authorities.

Meanwhile, members of the police, district administration, Forest Department, and other concerned agencies are stationed at the site to ensure the elephant's safety.

The concerned authorities expressed hope that the elephant will recover through the highest standard of medical treatment, intensive care, and coordinated efforts, and will eventually be returned to its natural habitat.
