RAJSHAHI, Feb 3, 2025 (BSS) - Election Commissioner (EC) Brig Gen (Retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah has said that everyone is eagerly waiting for the upcoming election, as they have been deprived of the opportunity to vote for a long time.

"After holding meetings with people from different walks of life across the country, I felt that they are eager to exercise their right to vote. We want to uphold the people's expectations," he said.

EC Sanaullah made these remarks while addressing a view-sharing meeting on updating the voter list and the next parliamentary election with administrative and Election Commission officials at the conference hall of the Regional Election Office here today as the chief guest.

With Regional Election Officer Delwar Hossain in the chair, the meeting was also addressed by Deputy Commissioner Afiya Akhter and Superintendent of Police Farzana Islam, among others.

EC Sanaullah said they are preparing to hold the national election as per the announcement of the head of the interim government.

The Election Commission is working tirelessly to ensure a free, fair, and festive parliamentary election across the country, he said, adding that the EC has instructed district and upazila-level officials to prepare an error-free voter list for a credible election.

He informed the meeting that the next national election will be held in December this year if the reform activities are minimal, while the election is expected to take place by June 2026 if the reforms are broader.

He, however, noted that holding local government elections depends on the government's decision.

Speaking separately to journalists, EC Sanaullah said that election officials involved in previous election fraud will be brought to justice. In this regard, recommendations have been made by the reform commission. "No one is above the law," he added.
