DHAKA, Feb 10, 2025 (BSS) – A total of 754 people were killed and 1,303 others received injures in 732 accidents in rail, roads and waterways across the country in January last.

The Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh (PWAB), a non-political and non-profit voluntary organization, today disclosed this in a press statement based on a survey report of its Accident Monitoring Cell.

The report was prepared by monitoring the news published by country’s 96 mass-circulated and credible national, regional, online and electronic news outlets, it said.

In January last, the highest number of accidents occurred in Dhaka division, while the lowest number of accidents took place in Mymensingh division, the PWAB mentioned. 

As many as 677 people were killed and 1,271 others were injured in 659 road accidents while 59 people were killed and 23 were injured in 57 railway accidents.

According to the newspaper reports 18 people were killed, nine were injured and five others went into missing in 16 accidents on the waterway across the country.
Accidents linked to motorcycle killed the highest number of 301 people and 239 injured in 289 motorcycle accidents during the stipulated timeframe. 

Besides, 139 people were killed and 336 others were injured in 163 accidents related with three-wheelers (battery-run easy bike, Nosimon, auto-rickshaw and Mahindra).

Besides, 163 battery-powered-easy bike-Nosimon-autorickshaw-Mahindra accidents caused 139 deaths and 336 injuries. It is 24.73 percent of the total accidents, 20.53 percent of the deaths and 26.43 percent of the injuries, the PWAB mentioned its release.

Of the total accidents, 41.60 percent were car crashes, 38.18 percent were head-on collisions, 13.35 percent for losing control of wheels and fell into ditches, 6.16 percent were due to various reasons and 0.69 percent was train-vehicle collisions.

In January last, 16 people of the  law enforcement agencies, 382 drivers, 238 pedestrians, 188 workers, 151 students, 17 teachers, 171 women, 21 children, eight journalists, three doctors, 12 officials of government and private organizations, and 41 leaders and activists of various political parties were killed in road accidents.
