NILPHAMARI, Feb 23, 2025 (BSS) – Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Ahsan H. Mansur today said that the incidents of bank looting happened only in Bangladesh with state sponsorship while the number of such looted banks is not one rather seven.

“Those banks were utilized through political process and thus money was siphoned off abroad,” he said.

The central bank Governor said this while addressing a discussion meeting titled “Current state of Bangladesh’s economy and future outline” as the chief guest at the Nilphamari Government College Auditorium here today.

Recalling his vast experiences in the financial sector, Dr Mansur said that the financial sector of no other country in the world was ruined except in Bangladesh through utilizing the state mechanism.

“I worked in many countries of the world with law and management. Yes, it’s true that bank management can be weak while there can be inflation,”

With College Principal Mahbubur Rahman Bhuiyan in the chair, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Nayiruzzaman spoke as special guest.

The central bank Governor alleged that some seven banks and financial institutions were in the hands of a family which was not done legally.

Mentioning that S Alam and his family held 80 percent of shares of the Islami Bank, Dr Mansur said, “How come they got such shares? It’s a total failure of the state machinery and the failure of the Bangladesh Bank. They were political directors,”

Stating that that family was given protection from the highest level of the state, the Governor said, “Wasn’t it known to us how a family took control of seven banks and thus made those bankrupt. We had surely known. But, nothing could be done and also knew the reasons behind it…”

College teachers, bank officials, and students took part in the discussion meeting. Later, the Bangladesh Bank Governor responded to the questions of the participants.
