BNP seeks polls as it believes in democracy: Tarique Rahman

CUMILLA, Feb 25, 2025 (BSS) - BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today said BNP sought national elections as it believes in people’s rule and democracy.

“Since we believe in people’s rule, and democracy, naturally we will seek elections. We will seek votes from the people, we will seek elections within the country,” he said while virtually addressing the Cumilla City BNP’s biennial council at Town Hall ground here
City BNP convener Udbatul Bari Abu presided over the programme.

Tarique Rahman said if the national elections are delayed, who will get the benefit and whose interests will be served, this is an important issue.

BNP acting chairman said the overthrown Awami League regime destroyed the country’s economy, judiciary, agriculture, education, health and election system and every state structure. 
He underlined the need for bringing stability to take the country forward.
Tarique Rahman hoped that the interim government would hold a fair national election smoothly to strengthen the democratic practice.
 
“We hope that they will maintain the neutrality that people expect from the government,” he added.

Tarique Rahman called for remaining united shunning all arguments for not giving an opportunity to conspirators. 

BNP Vice-Chairman Barkat Ullah Bulu, Cumilla divisional organizing secretary Principal Selim Bhuiyan, employment affairs secretary and Cumilla South District BNP convener Zakaria Taher Suman, relief and rehabilitation affairs secretary Haji Amin Ur Rashid Yasin, Cumilla South District BNP member secretary Ashiqur Rahman Mahmud Wasim and Cumilla divisional assistant-organizing secretary Mostaq Mia also spoke.

Udbatul Bari Abu was elected president while Yusuf Molla Tipu as general secretary and Rajiur Rahman Rajib as organizing secretary unopposed in Cumilla City BNP’s council.
