DHAKA, March 7, 2025 (BSS) — National Citizen Party (NPC) Convener
Nahid Islam today said they are ‘mentally prepared’ for the national
parliament elections.
“I never said elections would not be possible by December, rather I said
elections cannot be held under the current vulnerable condition of the
police,” Nahid gave clarification about his interview with Reuters, at a
press conference at the Jatiya Nagorik Committee office in the capital.
Nahid said, “We have talked about the Constituent Assembly and
national elections. But it is not just about the election; we want to see
visible judicial actions first. We want to see the implementation of the
July uprising declaration in the shortest possible time.”
Regarding his interview with news agency Reuters, Nahid also said there
were some misquotes in the Reuters interview. “I said financial support
for the party primarily comes from the affluent members of society and
well-wishers.”
The party is moving towards a crowd-funding initiative, both online and
offline, to set up offices and raise election funds, he said, adding, “Some
media outlets have spread incorrect information about this.”
NCP convener Nahid also emphasized the importance of ensuring
security and stability before the election, saying, “The current police
administration lacks experience in holding free and fair elections. Their
capability has not been tested for a long time. The law and order
situation needs to be improved before the elections.”
Nahid also voiced concerns about the rise in violence against women in
various parts of the country, including incidents of rape and eve-teasing.
The NCP strongly condemned the acts and urged the interim government
to ensure the safety of women in public spaces.
“We call on the interim government to ensure the safety of women in
public spaces. The government must take strict measures so that
perpetrators involved in violence against women are brought to justice,”
he added.
The NCP convener informed the press that the party is currently working
on fulfilling the necessary conditions for its registration as a political
entity.
NCP secretary general Akhtar Hossain announced that an iftar party will
be organized at Suhrawardy Udyan on March 10 with all stakeholders
involved in the July-August uprising. People from across the country
will be invited.
On the following day, Tuesday, an iftar party will be held with political
parties, civil society, and prominent individuals from various sectors, he
added.
Senior Joint Convener Samanta Shermeen, Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin
Patwary, NCP Chief Organizer (South region) Sarjis Alam Chief
Organizer (North Region) Hasnat Abdullah, were also present at the
press conference.
