DHAKA, Mar 11, 2025 (BSS) - The interim government has reinstated the posthumous Independence Award bestowed upon Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.

The Cabinet Division, in a notification signed by its Additional Secretary Mohammad Khaled Rahim, issued here announcing the names of recipients for this year’s Independence Award today.

It said the Independence Award given to Shaheed President and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman (posthumously) in 2003 will remain in force.

“The government cancelled the Independence Award (posthumously) given to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman in 2003 against the backdrop of the Supreme Court’s verdict in 2016,” it said.

In this verdict, since there was no direction to cancel the Independence Award, the government has revoked this decision considering Ziaur Rahman’s outstanding contribution to the Great Liberation War, the notification added.

Meanwhile, the government has nominated seven distinguished individuals for the “Independence Award 2025” in recognition of their glorious and outstanding contributions to the national level.

Among the eminent personalities nominated for the ‘Independence Award 2025’ are: Professor Jamal Nazrul Islam (posthumously) in science and technology, Mir Abdus Shukur Al Mahmud (posthumously) in literature, Novera Ahmed (posthumously) in culture, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed (posthumously) in social service, Mohammad Mahbubul Haque Khan alias Azam Khan (posthumously) in Liberation War and culture, Badruddin Mohammad Umar in education and research, and Abrar Fahad (posthumously) for his role as a young protester.
