BMU super specialized hospital starts liver OPD, IPD services

DHAKA, April 15, 2025 (BSS) - The Super Specialized Hospital of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) has launched both outpatient and inpatient services for the liver patients.

The hospital authority has initiated the admission of liver patients under the indoor patient department (IPD), said a BMU press release today. 
 
As part of this initiative, specialist consultation services for liver patients are now available in the Hepatology Outpatient Department (OPD) every day from 3 pm to 6 pm, excluding Fridays and public holidays.

Additionally, a range of diagnostic and treatment services are offered to these patients on Mondays and Wednesdays. These services include endoscopy, EVL, short and full colonoscopy, glue injection, endoscopic polypectomy, FNAC for liver SOL, treatment of liver abscess, PAIR therapy, ERCP stent removal and stenting, colonoscopy polypectomy, and duodenoscopy, among others.

Besides, under the Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Medical Services, patients requiring hepatobiliary and pancreatic care are admitted through both OPD consultations with specialist doctors and IPD services for surgical procedures.

The department offers a comprehensive range of surgeries, starting from gallstone removal to advanced pancreatic procedures. These include laparoscopic surgeries, the Whipple procedure, and more.

A significant initiative is underway to establish full-scale liver transplant services through the combined efforts of the Hepatobiliary Surgery and Liver Transplant Department. 

Additionally, regular follow-up consultations are provided for patients who have undergone liver transplants.

Moreover OPD medical services have been made available for Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Diseases, Hepatology, and Liver Transplant Centre.

The OPD at this centre offers specialized medical services in the following areas: Hepatology (Liver Diseases), Ophthalmology, Surgical Oncology, Gastroenterology, Colorectal Surgery, Hepatobiliary Surgery, Liver Transplant, Plastic Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, and General Surgery.

Patients with liver-related conditions (Hepatology) can consult with a specialist between 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm.

For other specialties—including Surgical Oncology, Ophthalmology, Gastroenterology, Liver Transplant, Colorectal Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, and General Surgery—specialist consultations are available in two shifts: from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and again from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, excluding Fridays and public holidays.

BMU Super Specialized Hospital has Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Disease, Hepatology and Liver Transplant Centre, Cardiovascular and Stroke Centre, Mother and Child Health Care Centre, Kidney Disease and Urology Centre and Accident and Emergency Centre. 

Several specialized medical services including heart, kidney, liver (hepatology), neuro are being provided to patients in these centres.
