GAIBANDHA, April 21, 2025 (BSS) - Speakers at a programme underscored the need for quick and early identification of fistula patients and bringing them under free treatment facilities to relieve them from various complications, including pain, fever, tenderness, and itching.

They made the observation at a daylong planning meeting on conducting a campaign for the detection of obstetric fistula patients in Gobindaganj upazila of the district, held at the hall room of the upazila health complex this afternoon.

The event was jointly organized by the Upazila Health Complex and the Upazila Family Planning Office in cooperation with LAMB Hospital, financed by UNFPA Bangladesh.

LAMB Hospital identifies obstetric fistula patients at the field level to bring them under treatment facilities provided by Rangpur Medical College Hospital, Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura, and LAMB Hospital in Dinajpur.

Civil Surgeon Dr Rafiquzzaman attended the function and addressed it as the chief guest.

Presided over by Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Masuder Rahman, the function was also addressed, among others, by Upazila Family Planning Officer Abdul Jalil, UNFPA Medical Officer Dr Shaheen Akhter, and Project Manager of LAMB Hospital Mahabub Liton.

Dr Rafiquzzaman, in his speech, said that if health staff of both government and non-government organizations work sincerely together, it would be possible to declare Gobindaganj upazila fistula-free within a short time.

To achieve this goal, he sought wholehearted cooperation from all concerned.

After an elaborate discussion, a decision was made to conduct a campaign for detecting obstetric fistula patients in all 68 community clinics of the upazila on May 5, said Shariful Islam Sharif, district facilitator of LAMB.

He added that the campaign would also be held at all 17 family welfare centres of the upazila on May 8, with the active participation of the staff and management teams of the family welfare centers.
