DHAKA, June 02, 2025 (BSS) - The National Citizens Party (NCP) has urged the interim government to announce the July Charter before announcing election date saying otherwise it might hamper the ongoing reforms efforts.

“Announcing the election date before the July Charter would disrupt the ongoing reform process. We have  waited 16 years and have already waited 10 more months — we are ready to wait two more months if it ensures meaningful reform,” NCP convener Nahid Islam told reporters following a meeting with the Chief Adviser.
Nahid said, “We discussed three key issues. First, we inquired about the progress on the July Charter, which the government had pledged to release. We strongly urged that the charter be issued within 30 working days.”

“The second point we raised was the upcoming anniversary of our mass uprising. With July approaching and the first anniversary of our democratic movement on August 5 drawing near, we urged that the July Charter be finalized with signatures from all stakeholders and formally enacted within the month,” he added.

Nahid also said, “If the election date is announced before declaring the July Charter, the reform process may be hampered. Therefore, we have urged the government—after waiting 16 years and 10 months—we are willing to wait another two months. And we want to give time to the government, collectively with all political parties.”

“Once the July Charter is in place, we expect the government to declare the election date. Only then we will reveal our party’s preferred timing for the election,” he said.

Finally, NCP raised concerns about the neutrality of the Election Commission (EC). “A fair election is impossible without reform of the commission,” said Nahid.

“Existing laws regarding the polls and the Election Commission must be revised, and the EC must be restructured. The current process raises serious questions about neutrality, and we urge the government to address this without delay,” said Nahid.
