Ministry of information always stands by journalists: Secretary

DHAKA, June 3, 2025 (BSS) - Information and Broadcasting Secretary Mahbuba Farjana today highlighted the existence of strong and enduring bridge between the ministry and the journalist community, reaffirming the ministry’s steadfastly support to journalists.

“The ministry of information always stands by journalists and will continue to do so in the future,” she said.

The secretary was addressing at a cheque distribution ceremony organized by Journalists Welfare Trust to distribute the cheque of financial support among the families of the deceased, sick and insolvent journalists at the DFP Auditorium of the Information Building here. 

Mentioning that some reports published in certain newspapers require verification, she said it is important for journalists to ensure the accuracy of information before publishing news.

She added, "Journalists should adhere to ethical standards and codes of conduct in journalism. Following these principles benefits everyone and helps prevent the spread of false or misleading information in society."

The secretary continued, "We are currently going through a period of transformation, which we should manage with patience and prudence. During such times, journalists are playing a crucial role."

With Mohammad Abdullah, Managing Director of the Bangladesh Journalists’ Welfare Trust in the chair, Principal Information Officer Md. Nizamul Kabir, Director General of the Department of Films and Publications Khaleda Begum, National Press Club General Secretary Ayub Bhuiyan, BFUJ Acting President Obaidur Rahman Shaheen, BFUJ Vice-President Khairul Bashar, PIB Director General Faruk Wasif, Dhaka Union of Journalists General Secretary Khurshid Alam, and Journalist Welfare Trust member Shaheen Hasnat, among others, also spoke on the occasion.

A total of TaKa 1.63 crore was distributed among the journalists families as financial support at the event.
