Country no need cattle from neighboring country ahead of Eid-ul-Azha: Farida

DHAKA, June 4, 2025 (BSS) - Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter said the country has sufficient stock of sacrificial animals to meet the demand during the upcoming holy Eid-ul-Azha, and there is no need to import cattle from neighbouring countries.

"The country has sufficient stock of cattle to meet the demand for sacrificial animals during Eid," she said this after visiting the cattle market at Dhaka Polytechnic Institute ground in Tejgaon on Tuesday evening.

The adviser said law enforcement agencies are maintaining strict surveillance so that no cattle can enter illegally from neighbouring countries through bordering areas.

"Veterinary doctors under the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) are working round the clock at cattle markets across the country to ensure animal health and safety," she added.

She also said cattle traders have been instructed not to use harmful methods for fattening animals, as part of the government's measures to ensure safe and ethical livestock practices.

The overall management of cattle markets in the capital is relatively better this year compared to previous years, Farida Akhter metioned.

DLS Director General Dr M Abu Sufian presided over the meeting held on the occasion. Among others, Project Director of the Livestock and Dairy Development Project Dr M Jashim Uddin, DLS Director (Admin) Dr M Baijer Rahman, Director (Production) Dr ABM Khaleduzzaman, Director (Artificial Reproduction) M Shahjahan, and senior officials as well as intern veterinary doctors from different universities were present.
