BRAC University student drowns in Boiran River

TANGAIL, June 11, 2025 (BSS) - A student of BRAC University drowned while bathing in the Bairan River in Tangail this afternoon. 

The deceased was Mostafa Shahriar Nihal, 22, son of Abdul Latif of Naluwa village under Vuwapur upazila here.

Nihal was a third-year student of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering department of the university.

According to eyewitnesses and family sources, Nihal used to live with his family in the capital's Rampura and came to Gopalpur of Tangail to attend the wedding ceremony of his cousin.

Nihal and two friends went to bathe in the Boiran river this noon. During the swim, Nihal and his friend Jisan were swept away by the current and were lost. Jisan was rescued immediately, but Nihal went missing.
 
A team of diver along with locals conducted searches for about 30 minutes but initially failed to locate him. Nearly an hour later, Nihal was retrieved from the river and taken to Gopalpur Upazila Health Complex, where doctor on duty declared him dead.

Gopalpur police station investigation officer Mamun Bhuiyan said the dead body was handed over to his family after completing the legal procedures.
